I have a list of songs that I can sing that runs to a rough current total of 750 songs that if I sang them all back to back would take one day and 22 hours to get through. (A bit like a typical Tigh Tailliurs night then…) I get through about 20 songs an hour so a three hour gig would be in the region of 60 songs, so that works out to less than 10 per cent of the total number of songs that I can sing.
I have another list of songs that I want to sing, songs I am learning. This list is about 350 plus songs long, and when I look at it I really want to add these songs to the main list of songs that I do. There are some great classic tracks on there that will really go down well. What am I to do? The only way I know how is to just jump in there and listen to the original, play along with the guitar part to learn that, get the melody into my head and then sing it that night at a gig. It works mostly. There have been occasions when I start to perform a new track like that and realise that I didn't prepare properly and the melody (usually) escapes me or there is some weird middle eight that I had forgotten to learn but with a bit of luck I can get through the track and everything is ok. There are a handful of tracks that I have never sang again, but we won't mention them again.
Anyway, I look forward to a time when the list of songs I really want to do is not quite as long as it is now, and that most of the songs on the current want to list are added to the main list of tracks that I know and perform regularly. If anyone has any suggestions for songs to add or songs that you wish I sang then please send me an email to let me know!
