I have been using some very old battered speakers and a Laney powered mixing desk for a while that was on loan. Now I have been lucky enough to find a pair of Mackie SRM450v2 powered speakers which have now replaced the older rig. These Mackies are the updated version of the SRM450s that I used to use as the in-house PA at the Irish Anvil in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. I used to love the sound at that bar, it was a fairly big place with lots of tables spread out and a large outdoor terrace but the speakers used to fill the venue with high quality sound every time. They were plenty loud enough even just ticking over at about one third of their power. I picked up the new version for sale and tried them out at my next gig at Tigh Tailliurs in Carraroe. I was blown away with the extra power, especially as it came with a very clear and high quality sound. There is a solid low bass, powerful mid and a sizzling clear top end that I was not used to hearing. Now I can hear the whole mix so much better. It actually meant that I could go back to the guitar sounds and reprogram all of them now that the sound was so much clearer. There was a whole spectrum of the guitar sound that previously had sounded ok, but now did not sound good enough when played through the new speakers. In other words, the new sound was showing up some sonic issues that were their all along but had not been clear enough to fix. With a couple of hours of guitar sound tweaking things were a lot better, and I came up with some new powerful rock sounds that really kicked some ass on the next couple of gigs!
